A condition assessment of Poole Harbour European Marine Site
This report assesses the condition of the bird interest features of the Harbour,
showing that the populations of species - for which the Harbour was designated an SPA
- are mostly stable or increasing. Changes in the areas of habitats have taken place and are likely in the future. These include loss of Saltmarsh habitat and possible changes to inter-tidal flats from climate change and sea level rise. The report also details the potential impacts to the birds through toxic contaminants, nutrient inputs, recreational usage and commercial activities. |

Important Birds of Poole Harbour and their status (1998/99 - 2004-05)
This report reviews the population changes that have occurred in the same 32 species included in the report (Pickess & Underhill-Day 2002). Notable changes in the wintering populations have
occurred; the Shelduck is no longer present in internationally important numbers but Avocet have rapidly
increased - the Harbour not only holds internationally important numbers but is now the premier wintering site in the UK. There have been large increases in breeding numbers of Black-headed and Mediterranean Gull, and both Sandwich & Common Tern are slowly
increasing. All these populations are of national importance. |
